The art of giving

A nationwide campaign to persuade people to buy works of art as Christmas presents has been mounted by the Scottish Arts Council to promote galleries, artists and special events across the country.
The organisation runs an “Own Art” scheme which offers an interest free loan between £100 and £2000 to help people buy a wide range of works of art, from paintings and sculpture to jewellery, furniture and textiles. The loan is repaid in ten equal monthly instalments. A list of festive highlights at the 48 galleries taking part in the scheme has been released on the arts council’s website. Wendy Law, manager of the Own Art scheme at the arts council, said: “The wonderful thing about buying a piece of contemporary art is that it is a unique work that has taken time, dedication and creative thought and aspiration on the part of the artist. “The Own Art scheme exists so that buying a piece of art is made more affordable.”
