The Helix Park is a major attraction if you visit Falkirk , with  27 kilometres ( 17 miles ) of cycleways and footpaths , making it an ideal resort for families as well as walkers and cyclists. The Park is on the route of the new John Muir Way which goes from Dunbar , Muir’s home town , to the west coast of Scotland .  The Helix Park in Grangemouth covers a greenspace of almost 300 hectares. Opening up Scotland’s canal network, the Helix also offers an outdoor recreational area filled with woodland, park, watersports lagoon, pathways, cycleways, and the hugely successful 30 metre landmark sculptures, the Kelpies, the largest equine sculptures in the world

The aim of the project is to transform under-used land between Falkirk and Grangemouth into a thriving urban greenspace , “The Helix”. This includes a performance area, on which large scale events can be held, facilities for watersports provided by the construction of a large lagoon, all surrounded by play areas and high quality pathways.

The Kelpies are 30 metre high sculptures of Clydesdale horses , a unique tribute to the work horses of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the freight barges and coalships along the canals of Scotland in the nineteenth century . Canals shaped the geographical layout of the Falkirk area. The Kelpies are the centrepiece of the Helix Park in Falkirk .

In an amazing feat of engineering, The Kelpies rose from the ground in just 90 days, in late 2013.

Construction of The Kelpies began on 17th  June 2013. The two enormous structures were manufactured and installed by SH Structures Limited In a remarkable feat of engineering, the sculptures rose out of the ground in a stunning construction process, captured in all its glory by Walid Salhab in his dramatic time-lapse stop-motion film.

The build was officially completed on 27th November 2013, and was celebrated with a ‘topping-out’ ceremony featuring Duke and Baron, the Clydesdale life models for The Kelpies.

Glasgow artist Andy Scott designed the Kelpies, with construction work on the 300-tonne, 98ft (30m) steel figures starting in 2013.

Kelpies creator unveils new horse sculpture

Andy Scott, creator of the iconic Kelpies sculptures has created a major new work of art for Edinburgh’s New Town.

The giant chess piece has been installed by the artist and the long-standing silversmiths to the Queen, who have been based at 87 George Street since 1952, outside their showroom and will remain in place until the end of September.

The Rook, which is made of galvanised steel, is the first in a series of collaborations between Glasgow-born Scott and the famous Edinburgh firm.

The chariot horse – which is said to be evocative of ancient Persia – is an outsized version of a vast “Game of Kings” chess set Scott is creating with Hamilton & Inches. Its features include a feathered head-dress, bridle and collar.

Each hand-craft piece for the game, which will be able to be played on a 6.6 ft by 6.6 ft gaming table, will be based on the head and neck composition of The Kelpies.

The Kelpies – the world’s largest equine sculptures –  have drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to the new Helix public park in Falkirk since they were unveiled in Falkirk two years ago.

Scott, a Glasgow School of Art graduate, has created more than 70 projects around the world, including the Heavy Horse next to the M8 motorway, the Ibrox Disaster Memorial and Arria, a sculpture of a female form, which overlooks the M80 at Cumbernauld.

He said today: “There is a mutual recognition and respect between myself and Hamilton & Inches team of silversmith craftsmen.

“You don’t see any computers in our workshops, our work is rooted in the traditions of Scottish craft and I like that.
